When I began this business in 2012, I selected a name that reflected the biggest role in my life: the role of mother to my three daughters. In the past five years, my children have grown and I am at the threshold of a whole new chapter in life. I have been reflecting on who I am going to be as a person as I navigate the world of being a parent to adults. What is my role for them? What do I want to fill my days with? How do I view myself in this new era? I know many parents have these same questions. This isn’t a new theme. But it’s new to me, and it feels like a time ripe with change.

Numbers have been a constant throughout my life. My mind connects to patterns and order more rapidly than it does to some more “artistic” themes. This might sound strange coming from a creative business owner, but it’s true! Beyond career, family, friends, and my various roles in life, the core of my mind is built on numbers. I want my fiber business to reflect that.

I am excited to announce my continuing adventures in the world of fiber arts will now have a new name and look. The name Abacus Dyeworks pays homage to the abacus: the ancient device used for centuries to tally and calculate sums. It honors my deep appreciation for numbers, patterns, order, and analysis. It’s a new chapter, a new challenge, and a new beginning. Perfect for this New Year, don’t you think?

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me in this wooly journey, and welcome to those just joining in! You will be able to follow me on all social media (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) as @abacusdyeworks to get updates on what’s new and exciting here with me. Feel free to share your projects by tagging me or using the hashtag #abacusdyeworks so I can see your lovely work. I could not do any of this without you amazing knitters, crocheters, spinners, and weavers, so thank you again!

In Fiber Fondness,

Lisa
